If you’ve priced out an IGNITE system recently, you may have noticed they quietly walked away from MJG initiators (the “Firewire” fuse-tube igniters we run our show on). As of their January notice, IGNITE no longer recommends or supports MJG, Chinese e-match, or their own Fuse-Tube product with the system at all. Clip-ons only, going forward.

We dug into this, since it’s the thing setting off our show.

The official reason is electrostatic discharge (ESD) and friction sensitivity, MJG initiators can, in rare cases, fire from static or handling rather than the module. That’s real. COBRA, MJG’s biggest reseller, says as much in their own FAQ: friction sensitive, much less so than professional e-match, and the risk of inadvertent firing is “very small” but not zero.

This small risk isn’t why IGNITE pulled support. Read between the lines of their notice and it’s a customer-base problem, not a new product defect. IGNITE started as a tool for fireworks hobbyists and has grown into something a lot of non-hobbyists now buy off the shelf. A pro-grade igniter that’s safe in the hands of someone who knows to avoid synthetic clothing, ground themselves, and never handle a live igniter near the shells is a different animal in the hands of someone firing their first show. IGNITE doesn’t get to vet who’s buying the module, so they moved the whole customer base to the lowest common denominator. That’s a liability call, not a “these things are unsafe” recall. There’s no CPSC action, no formal recall, nothing pinning a documented injury on an MJG going off on its own that we could find, just an acknowledged small risk and a company deciding it isn’t worth the exposure anymore.

We’re not the lowest common denominator here. We check continuity from a distance, never with a hot igniter in hand. Igniters go in last, after everything else is staged, and stay shunted until they’re connected. Our processes and safety are much closer to how a licensed crew handles e-match than how a first-timer handles a consumer clip-on.

So we’re sticking with MJG for now. The actual risk is small and well understood, and our procedures are built around the specific failure mode IGNITE is worried about.
